MONTREAL: The odor of dirty socks can be used to lure mosquitoes into a deadly trap before they can spread malaria, a US and Canadian-funded researcher based in Africa said Wednesday.

Dr. Fredros Okumu, of the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, discovered through an experiment that mosquitoes were more attracted to the odor of filthy feet than to live humans sleeping in the same area.>>>Read Full Story on dawn.com

Facebook use in gov't saps productivity: CSC | ABS-CBN News | Latest Philippine Headlines, Breaking News, Video, Analysis, Features

Computerization and provision of internet connections in every offices of a department was of great help.  The government spent millions of pesos providing almost all employees their own computer with internet connections.  But with all these improvements, the problem remains in some government offices .  Services seems to be slower than before. The most common things that kill employees productivity before includes  “tsismisan” (gossiping) and some computer games like solitaire.  But because of the free access to the internet, employees are now more open to distracting sites in the world wide web during office hours.

Based on recent surveys, the top sites that eat up an employee’s time in the office are Facebook, Multiply, Yahoo Messenger, and NBA.com.

In office scenarios where computer works are switched on side by side Facebook and Multiply, the line drawn between official and personal business is growing finer and finer.

The Facebook, though vital for networking in media-related companies, can turn out to be of negative impact to productivity.  Sure, Facebook is good for networking, but there is a thin line between research and dawdling.  It can be tempting and distracting, catching your attention all day and giving less time for official business.  You can e-mail a friend, send an instant message, upload your photos from your beach trip, play scrabble, answer stupid quizzes, feed a virtual pet, and even snoop into your boss’s personal life.

Just how much of this personal stuff at work is really tolerable? Take a look around and you might observe that the culture allows it.  But it does not mean that it is ok.  It turns off clients to see people conducting their personal stuff on office time.  Take a look at the comments below and see how they picture government employees nowadays.

The Civil Service Commission said it bans the use of computer games and social networking sites in government offices.  Government employees found playing computer games or going to social networking sites will face a reprimand or warning for the first offence, suspension for the second and dismissal for the third offense.

I just hope that this won’t be another  “ningas kugon.” Actually some offices including where I work, already issued memos about this restriction before.  But there was no strict implementation.  It only remains on paper.

As a government employee, we must know what’s okay and what’s too much.  Discipline is all what we need to solve the problem.  Why are we at work? Why do we need to answer that Facebook comment now? Anything that negatively impacts our productivity is too much.

Central Luzon dengue level critical | Sun.Star

With the help of the media people are becoming more aware of the dengue situation in certain areas. We are being warned of the increasing number of cases so as to prevent further worsening of the situation. The Department of Health is closely monitoring the situation but the most effective solution must come from the local health units and households of the affected areas.

The director of DOH Center for Health Development 3, Dr. Rio L. Magpantay, is calling the public to continue their efforts in eliminating the population of dengue mosquitoes in their communities by cleaning their environment.

"We are experiencing a dramatic peak in the number of cases this year and we are extensively monitoring it to avert a possible outbreak."
"I call on the local government leaders and households of the provinces with a high number of cases to continue their clean-up drive against dengue. Even with the use of Ovitraps, we still need to find and destroy the breeding places of dengue mosquitoes. It is still the most effective way of reducing their population."

"I advise the public not to be alarmed as the DOH Center for Health Development 3 (Central Luzon) remains on top of the situation and continually intensifying its efforts to reduce the spread of dengue in areas where there are clustering of cases," Dr. Magpantay said.

The department is expecting a positive response to this call by taking necessary actions and helping to spread awareness. The department wants to hear from you. Below are some of the readers comments as posted on yahoo.

The roots of the problem here is purely POOR sanitation. The DOH in the PH MUST implement health awareness to all Pilipinos. Inaction of their responsibilities merely means impeachment trial like that of Merci Gutierrez . Their salary is being paid by the public and they have the responsibilty to do their task accordingly.

Blame does not go all to DOH.. partly, for the programs and projects, they should have founded more that are effective.. "Longer reach to the affected areas"

The first ones to blame are those people, na kahit bini----an na ng guidelines kung paano ito and paano iyan.. still doesn't follow them, in return, na spread na ung parasite.

" need na magbawas ng tao, overpopulation na ang pinas " :D

DOH just tells us the number of cases but is there a way you (DOH) make actions to prevent this outbreak?

Ron
I am more surprised that people are not dying by the truck load. Due to a lack of Food Safety procedures, from the way meat and poultry is sold unrefrigerated all day long. Along with road side eats stands, selling food that sits in the danger zone of temperature for hours on end. People must be use to having flu like systems of food poisoning, on a daily basis. And think that it is normal.

Edward one problem is a lot of people in philippines take cold water showers ,not hot water with soap.another problem is the bad sewage system in philippines.

Ron
Sanitation big time. The education or lack there of, is a major contributor to all situations like this. It is sad to see so many people of age, lacking such basic educational back ground. Almost looks like a repeat from the middle ages.
Wake up and smell the coffee.
or in this case, educate your people.

" Well , walang gumusto- nan----ari lng dahil sa kapabayaan ndin ng mga tao " kaya pls need discipline lalo pa ngaun ...sama n ng panahon

An Alleged Army Major Trying To Steal Money From Owners Of Clinical Laboratories In Bulacan

By Jeffrey V. de Guzman

Introducing himself as a dear friend of Attorney Lutero of Bureau of Health Facilities and Services Division of the Department of Health, this alleged army major tries to rip off money from clinical laboratory owners in Bulacan. This unknown man identified himself as an army major to sell tickets to the unsuspecting owners. Apparently, he was forcing them to buy three tickets that cost 6,000 pesos apiece.

The first grievance came from the owner of San Roque Drug Testing Laboratory.  According to one of her staff, she received a call from a woman saying that her boss wants to talk to the owner.  The man introduced himself as an army major and a close friend of attorney Lutero, who happens to be the chief of BHFS.  The man said that attorney Lutero want to sell three tickets to her and his representative will deliver the tickets and collect the payment.

The CHD 3 office also received information that one owner of another laboratory in Bulacan actually bought one ticket already.  And last Friday (November 26, 2010), we received another complaint from the owner of a laboratory from San Jose Del Monte City.

An investigation is underway as of this writing. On behalf of the department, we want to inform everyone that no such solicitation has been authorized and other related activities are not permitted. Through this article, please be warned and be extra careful when dealing with people who are trying to associate themselves with Atty. Lutero or any member of the department.

We are calling on everyone involved to please help us in disseminating the information to stop this fraudulent incident from happening again.
